Hello Caltech alumni,
This is a trial since we have not done it recently (to my knowledge). Loose terms of reference at this time: simply suggesting to have a social gathering and friendly discussions, perhaps around the theme of how the world has changed since you left Caltech and what your outlook for the future is. Let’s see how many people are interested and plan will be refined on that basis (location, format, etc), closer to the day but well in time. In any case it’ll be simple and informal, like me. Partners and big children welcome. Anticipated outcomes: a good time for all, and possibly new professional and/or personal relationships… Let me know if you are interested, without commitment at this time.

Cheers,
Martin Storey

I can make decent choc. chip cookies though (and have a bbq in case someone wants to grill something).

We had great fun meeting the next generation of Techers in Ann Arbor last year so we’re excited to host this year’s edition at my (JTS) home. If the weather is nice, then we can dine and chat in our backyard beer garden tables imported from Germany. We’ll send out some options for dinner choices closer to the event.

I graduated in 1978 with a BS in Biology (Ricketts). I met my wife in graduate school at Washington University in St. Louis, where I got my PhD in Neuroscience. We moved to the Boston area for postdoctoral positions: I did basic research at Brandeis University, before I moved onto applied research at MIT. This led to my first position at a start-up biopharmaceutical company called Cambridge Neuroscience. I stayed in the Biotech Industry my entire career, and after my last ‘regular’ job I formed my own company, McCarthy Consultants, Inc. I’ve been consulting with early-stage and start-up companies for over 11 years now, and I enjoy setting my own schedule and choosing who I want to work with. We recently moved from the Boston suburbs to beautiful Cape Cod. Cape life is very different from city life (Pasadena, LA, St. Louis, or Boston) and it would be great to meet other new and old Techers. I enjoy beaches, snorkeling, hiking, amateur photography and birding, and spending time with my wife, our 90-lb Coonhound and 2 Norwegian Forest cats. I look forward to meeting other Techers and learning about your life and career journeys, your interests & hobbies, and your hopes for the future.

He would love to share more about his most recent hobby: all types of dance lessons as well as chat about all things related to dumplings.

Deepak was a chemical engineer in Fleming and played soccer all four years before completing a ScD in synthetic biology. He recently relocated to NYC to join a small team focused on long-term innovation in deep and frontier tech (quantum computing, fusion energy, organoids). He would love to talk about his two favorite hobbies: growing fruit trees and crafting cocktails.

It’s wonderful to learn about what people are up to over dinner. I’ll be providing a Vegetarian/Vegan dinner with several different drink types. Happy to accommodate requests, so please let me know beforehand.

I graduated in 1969 with a PhD in EE specializing in Laser. Worked a couple years for Northrop Corporate search and then pivoted to entrepreneurship…Newport and New Focus. In my retirement, I started Bonsai Heirloom…very excited learning techniques in B to C eCommerce, which is entirely different from tech entrepreneurship. Old dogs can learn new tricks! We can cover a lot of topics at lunch, including cooking, raising children, attitude towards learning, career optimization…My hot bottom is to not get pigeonholed into technology…Hey, Caltech training enables us to tackle any field, any undertaking!

Pasadena, California | Sandra Tsing Loh (BS '83) with Eugene Loh (BS '80)

Date and Time: Saturday, July 26 at 6:00 p.m.
City and State: Pasadena, California
Location: Home

Host Message
Welcome! Sandra (BS 1983) and Eugene (BS 1980) were Physics majors in Page House a long while (and a few temperature ticks) ago. A passion of Eugene’s – and source of lively sibling debates – is climate change, aka: what we can do about it, as individuals, scientists, science communicators, more. This dinner party theme is EUGENE’S ECO DINNER. Inspired by some of Eugene’s practices (he does not fly nor drive), we ask that you get to Sandra’s house in Pasadena (2.6 miles away from Caltech) by the most eco-friendly means possible (and you may tell us about it). Bring any beverage or dish that you deem eco-friendly. Obviously, a flat of plastic-bottled Fiji water will yield a buzzer blat; conversely, if you bring nothing, but have an articulate explanation as to why humans’ – or at least First World Pasadena humans’ – eating less is good for the planet, that is very much in the spirit of this lively dinner. To be clear, we WILL provide a delicious meal – the potluck concept is chiefly to trigger discussion. Just because Eugene has been known to eat crickets for protein doesn’t mean that you – or for heaven’s sake, Sandra – have to (blech!).

Host Message
I am a double alum of Caltech. I graduated with a BS in Engineering and Applied Science in 2000 with a concentration in ME (there was no ME degree at the time). I started in Page house and have a lot of great memories, but became unaffiliated later. I spent lots of time in the south houses as well, mostly Dabney and Ricketts. If there was an event on campus, I wanted to be there – grease frosh, Apache, drop day and more 🙂 I returned for a PhD in Bioengineering which I completed in 2005. I have been local ever since and am now a professor and program director of MS in Medical Device Engineering at KGI. I didn’t plan on becoming a professor, but here I am!

I would love to host guests, any age, at my house in Upland for a dinner I make and/or cater depending on the food needs. It’s a big world out there, and it takes effort to stay involved and connected.
