November 18, 1927 - December 21, 2013. Bernard David Rudin, 86, Roseville, CA passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 21, 2013. At the time of his passing, he and Jean, his wife of 63 years, had just moved from their home in Roseville, CA to "the Terraces", in Santa Rosa, CA. Born in Los Angeles on November 18, 1927 to Isadore and Lillie Weiner Rudin, Bernard lived a very full life. Professionally he was a computer scientist who worked with computer pioneer Howard Aiken on the first computers designed for IBM. Bernard received his undergraduate degree in Astrophysics at the California Institute of Technology in 1949, his Master of Science at the University of Southern California in 1951, and his Doctorate in Mathematics from Stanford in 1965. His expertise, professional goodwill and contributions as a scientist, engineer and leader in the field of computing were highly valued at many companies and organizations including Lockheed, IBM, and NASA. Upon retirement from IBM, Bernard started a second career as a writer. He completed three novels and a book on management that his family hopes to publish within the next year. In his retirement, he also worked on some yet unsolved mathematics problems. Privately he was a loving husband, father, father-in-law and friend. Bernard married Jean Charlotte Shulman on July 30, 1950. During their married life, he and Jean lived in a variety of wonderful places including Sunnyvale, CA; Palos Verdes, CA; Poughkeepsie, New York; and Austin, Texas. For the past 15 years they resided in Roseville, Ca. Bernard and Jean loved to travel and took over 50 cruises and trips to worldwide destinations during their marriage including Tahiti, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and Australia. His wonderful stories, wit, wisdom and good advice will be missed by his wife, Jean, two daughters, Holly Rudin-Braschi and Emilie (Rudin) Smith, RN, his son-in laws, John Braschi and Rick Smith and his granddaughter Nicole Julianne Smith. He will also be missed by his surviving brother, Mel Rudin and sister-in-law Vicci Rudin. We invite all who knew Bernard D.
