Physics-based Animation at Pixar
By Fernando de Goes

Pixar's films make heavy use of physically simulated effects such as the motion of hair, cloth, and water, to cite a few. Whereas physical accuracy is of paramount importance in engineering applications, animation productions also rely on flexible workflows to account for art direction. In this talk, I'll survey some of our work in this area, including volume-aware sculpting brushes, new hyperelastic material models, and our performant solver for physically based simulation of soft bodies.

Fernando is a principal research scientist at Pixar Animation Studios working on geometry processing and computational physics. He received an engineering degree from Unicamp/Brazil and later a PhD degree from Caltech supported by a Google PhD Fellowship. More recently, he was awarded a SciTech Oscar for coauthoring Pixar's elastic simulation system.
