On Friday, April 5, come to 8VC as Caltech Alumni Relations visits Texas for Caltech In Austin. Meet your local Techer community and Techers from far and wide who are in town to witness the total solar eclipse.

Texas has a vibrant and growing alumni community. Nearly 1,500 members of the Caltech community live within 200 miles of Austin. That group includes four Distinguished Alumni Award recipients, 159 scholarship recipients, and 155 former Caltech athletes. The area’s top employers include University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, and ExxonMobil Corporation with alumni working in aeronautics, higher education, research, technology, and more.

Spend an evening rekindling memories and fostering relationships with Techers in your neighborhood. Connect with your Caltech community while listening to an engaging discussion by Professor Douglas Duncan, PhD (BS '73), University of Colorado emeritus faculty member and former Director of Fiske Planetarium.

Emeritus Faculty, University of Colorado and former Director, Fiske Planetarium

Douglas Duncan, PhD (BS '73) is an astronomer at the University of Colorado. From 2002 to 2018, he directed Fiske Planetarium, leading it to become one of the most advanced planetariums in the US. Duncan earned degrees at Caltech and the University of California Santa Cruz. He was part of the project that first found sunspot cycles on other stars. Subsequently, he joined the staff of the Hubble Space Telescope. In 1992, he accepted a joint appointment at the University of Chicago and the Adler Planetarium, beginning a trend of modernization of planetariums, which has spread to New York, Denver, Los Angeles, and now Boulder.

Doug has more than 50 refereed publications that have been cited more than 7,000 times.

He is well known as a popularizer of astronomy, including numerous appearances as commentator and expert on NPR. He has a grant from NASA to produce and nationally distribute 360 degree (“full-dome”) planetarium features highlighting NASA’s varied missions. Duncan currently leads educational trips throughout the world to watch total eclipses of the sun and to see the Northern Lights.

Presentation

How Should You Spend the Four Short Minutes of Totality?

What's the greatest science discovery you can make at an eclipse? Right after Einstein predicted that gravity works by distorting space, astronomers realized that starlight passing the sun could provide an experimental test. Learn how to see starlight passing near the sun during the total eclipse.
