Research scientist Andreas Faisst of Caltech’s IPAC will serve as host. Speakers include Jamie Bock, professor of physics and principal investigator of NASA’s SPHEREx mission, and PhD candidate Sam Rose, who will present The Stellar Graveyard: Black Holes, Neutron Stars, and White Dwarfs. Graduate students will be on hand to operate a solar telescope and answer questions throughout the day.

Celebrate with fellow alums and hear from Caltech President Thomas F. Rosenbaum as we honor the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology and mark the 100-year anniversary of the mathematical formulation of quantum mechanics. Thomas F. Rosenbaum is Caltech’s ninth president and the Sonja and William Davidow Presidential Chair and professor of physics. He is an expert on the quantum mechanical nature of materials, conducting research at Bell Laboratories, IBM Watson Research Center, and the University of Chicago, where he served as Vice President for Research & Argonne National Laboratory and then Provost, before joining the Caltech community in 2014.
The event will feature food stations, drinks, presentations, and audience Q&A.
Sunday, October 19

MEET AT THE CALTECH Y (505 S. WILSON AVE.)
Shuttle transportation will be provided.
Join us for a morning hike as we explore one of the beautiful local trails in the San Gabriel foothills. Since the Eaton Canyon trail is currently inaccessible due to the recent fires, we’ll plan to explore another easy to moderate trail in the area, exact location to be determined. No matter where we go, you can count on great company and engaging conversations with fellow alums and current Y-affiliated students.
Meet at the Caltech Y for a light pre-hike snack and to board the shuttle. Please come prepared with sturdy shoes, sun protection, water, and insect repellent.
