This fall’s Caltech in Los Alamos program brought the alumni community together in the heart of New Mexico. Alumni, postdocs, and friends spent the day exploring the “Secret City,” beginning with a guided tour of the Los Alamos History Museum. Attendees learned about ancestral Pueblo sites, early homestead life, and how J. Robert Oppenheimer and General Leslie Groves chose Los Alamos as the headquarters for the Manhattan Project.
The day continued at the Bradbury Science Museum, where guests shared lunch and a conversation with Los Alamos National Laboratory scientists David Chavez (BS ’96, DAA ’14), Sara Del Valle, PhD, and Quaye Quartey. Their discussion spanned high-energy materials, infectious disease modeling, and innovative nuclear engineering, offering unique insights into the ways science continues to shape global security and discovery.
Throughout the program, participants connected with one another and reflected on the scientific and cultural legacy of Los Alamos. Many remarked that the event offered both an opportunity to learn and a chance to strengthen their ties to the Caltech community.
We are grateful to our speakers and all who joined us for this memorable day of history, science, and connection.
