Rosenbaum\, Sonja and William Davidow Presidential Chair and Professor of Physics\, is the ninth President of Caltech. He is an expert on the quantum mechanical nature of materials\, conducting research at Bell Laboratories\, IBM Watson Research Center\, and the University of Chicago\, where he served as Vice President for Research & Argonne National Laboratory and then Provost\, before moving to Caltech in 2014. He received his bachelor’s degree in physics with honors from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University. \nFrom Vanquishing Smog to Surfboard Design: Caltech Technologies Improving People’s Lives \nCaltech is famous for opening new scientific vistas: molecular biology\, gene sequencing\, nanoscience\, neuromorphic computing\, quarks\, quasars\, and seismology\, to name a few. Less familiar is Caltech’s role in translating fundamental discoveries into technologies that improve people’s lives.  These include catalytic converters to eliminate smog\, early electric vehicles\, modern-day electronics\, and even surfboard design.  Dr. Rosenbaum will touch on some of these accomplishments and the stories of the people behind them.
