"Making Heat Cool: The Matrix Story” by Douglas Tham (PhD ‘12)
Battery life is the biggest problem with today's wearable devices, and most of them require frequent recharging. Enter the MATRIX PowerWatch family, smartwatches powered by body heat. They utilize the temperature differential between the body and the environment to generate electrical power so as to remove the need for recharging. Our original PowerWatch has a simple and easy-to-use interface, with standard notifications as well as activity and sleep tracking. The new PowerWatch 2, launched at CES 2019, adds solar harvesting, GPS and heart rate monitoring. PowerWatches work with both Android and iOS smartphones.
I will share the story of how we (naively) started a company, built out our technology platform, and created award-winning products along the way. I'll also introduce the energy harvesting technology that is in the PowerWatch and show how it will power a new generation of wearable and IoT devices.
