All Alumni ARE MEMBERS

The Caltech Alumni Association (CAA) welcomes all Caltech alumni as members of our alumni community!

In order to be more inclusive and to better serve and communicate with all Caltech alumni, we have recently eliminated membership dues thanks to an overwhelmingly affirmative vote by our members, as well as a generous pledge of support from Caltech.

All alumni are now members of the CAA.

FAQs About Membership for All Alumni

What prompted this opportunity?
For the past two years, members of the CAA Board of Directors have been in active conversations with Caltech about how to eliminate the need for CAA membership dues. The solution was to raise an endowment to replace the income received from membership dues. Under the new agreement, Caltech will now provide funds to the CAA to make this possible with enough additional income to meet our short- and long-term goals.

But aren’t all alumni already members of the CAA?
In the past, only those who had paid dues were considered members of the CAA. The CAA Board of Directors felt that eliminating membership dues was a key step to fulfilling the CAA’s mission of strengthening the ties of goodwill and communication between the Institute, its alumni, and its students.

What won’t change about the CAA?
The CAA will remain a separate, independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The alumni led and elected CAA Board of Directors will remain an independent governing body, and the CAA will continue to design and implement alumni programming to help our community thrive. We will also continue our strong partnership with Caltech. The Institute has provided significant resources to carry out our mission including paying the salaries of our staff members, sustaining Alumni House, and collaborating with us to engage partners across campus to help weave alumni into campus life in relevant and impactful ways.

What will change?
All current and future alumni are now members of the CAA without paying dues. Creating a much more inclusive alumni network of 24,000 strong.

How does this impact the value of the funds used if I purchased a lifetime membership?
It doesn’t. As a lifetime member, you contributed to the CAA, and the CAA has dutifully used those funds to provide alumni programming and the interest earned from your life membership dues will continue to do so. However, with the new endowment, future alumni won’t need to pay dues. Most importantly, we appreciate and thank you for your past support and look forward to your continued participation as we grow and diversify our programming.
