Excellence in Volunteering Award

Out of the goodness of their hearts, hundreds of alumni give their expertise and enthusiasm – not to mention their free time – to give back to Caltech. Thanks to our volunteers, the Alumni Association is able to host events and programs all over the world, recruit the best new Frosh from high schools across the country, and keep the Caltech community connected to campus and beyond.

We honor the alumni below as recipients of the Excellence in Volunteering Award. They've gone above and beyond when it comes to giving up their free time, sending emails, shaking hands and organizing Techer activities. Read more about their accomplishments below. And, if you think you can spare a few moments of your time, sign up to be a volunteer yourself.

2008 Honorees

Jim Workman '57

Jim's dedication to alumni is exemplified by his many years of service to his classmates and fellow Caltech graduates, ranging from serving as reunion chair, to his commitment to the Gnome Club, to his past presidency of the Alumni Association board. Some of his most visible efforts are focused on engaging and motivating "alumni to be" – current Caltech students. He has lent his hand across campus to all facets of student life from undergraduate research like the SURF program and beyond the Caltech campus with the Caltech Y. He is a familiar face at every student/alumni event on campus, and takes time to meet each student personally, welcoming new undergrads, grad students and postdocs to the Caltech community.

Bob Perpall '52

Bob has served Caltech in several official capacities as a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors (for two terms), as the president of the Gnome Club (for two terms) and has served on the Board of Directors of the Caltech Associates. He fosters communication between his classmates and the Institute as a whole. As the unofficial communications coordinator, he has made it his personal responsibility to keep the members of his class connected and up to date with news about each other and about the Institute. Bob's life membership on the SURF board and his dedication to the Caltech Y show his commitment to students and his interest in fostering both their academic pursuits and their involvement in "life beyond Caltech."
