Culinary and Cultural Tour of Amalfi Coast, Italy

Sunday, Jul 2   - Saturday, Jul 8, 2017

with
Tom Mannion
Senior Director, Student Activities and Programs
(and noted Caltech chef!)

We set out to plan a special itinerary for the Caltech Alumni Association that combines beautiful walks with an emphasis on the cooking and culinary traditions of the Amalfi peninsula. Enjoy the seafood, fresh fruits and cheeses. We will be joined by Tom Mannion, Senior Director Student Activities and Programs and instructor of one of Caltech’s most popular classes: PA-16 Cooking Basics (a survey of cooking and food science) and two current students. Like a great Italian meal, this week is a long, happy, satisfying event that you'll wish would never end.

Solar Eclipse Viewing in Madras, Oregon

Aug 18 – 22, 2017

with the Harvey Mudd Alumni Association

Madras, Oregon has been identified as one of the best viewing locations of next year's solar eclipse, and many are already planning trips to witness this historic event. While lodging in Madras has been full for over a year, we have reserved the Mt. Jefferson Rifle Archery & Pistol Association Facility from Friday August 18 through Tuesday August 22. We'll hold our eclipse-viewing celebration here on Monday, August 21. Note that travelers to Madras have been advised to arrive by Sunday night to avoid gridlock with the thousands of other eclipse-chasers making their way on small country roads.

A Biographical and Cultural Exploration of New Zealand's South Island

Friday, Dec 1   - Sunday, Dec 10, 2017

with
Rob Phillips
Fred and Nancy Morris Professor of Biophysics and Biology

Join the Caltech Alumni Association, Caltech professor Rob Phillips and some of his students in New Zealand to explore a tropical rainforest…at the foot of a glacier. A climatic impossibility? No, it’s just the gorgeous, startling South Island. Caltech will introduce you to a land you would not find on your own. Our local guide also arranges for naturalists, historians and other experts to share their knowledge. As part of this trip, Phillips and several of his students will provide an optional (not included in tour price) weekend long molecular biology boot camp at Caltech on September 9 and 10, 2017 aimed at giving our travelers the chance to see how to obtain DNA sequences and how such sequences can be used to understand how the animals and plants of New Zealand got there.
