The Caltech Alumni Association Analemmatic Sundial

What is the sundial made of?

Contrary to what you might think, the sundial is not made of granite. It is in fact Granodiorite (Muscovite-bearing biotite-granodiorite, to be exact). The rock came from Knowles Quarry, east of Raymond, California (map). The quarry is the white scar in this mapped image.

Location: 37 deg., 13' 11.25" N 119 deg., 52' 26.54" W, 283m.

Special thanks to Caltech Professor Paul Asimow ('93 MS, '97 PhD GE) for these details.
